Monuments to Gago Coutinho & Sacadura Cabral

Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde.

Porto Grande ("Big Harbor") is the the great bay and best harbor of Cape Verde, located in Mindelo, São Vicente Island. Thus, it was the obvious choice for Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral when they had to land their seaplane on their pioneer journey — the first air crossing from Europe (Portugal) to South America (Brazil) in 1922.
The column sculpture near the bay is a monument to the flight of Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral.
In front of the Municipal Library (photo of the yellow building) there is an older monument that celebrates also this flight.
